Mozilla Says It’s Not Working on a Firefox TV Dongle, but a Partner Could Be

Firefox OS dongle

A Twitter posting by a Mozilla developer evangelist has sparked belief that the company was readying its own take on Chromecast, with a dongle based on Firefox OS.

Christian Heilmann’s tweet showed a picture of a prototype and said, “A fully open TV casting prototype device running #FirefoxOS. Open boot loader and all.”

Despite the Twitter posting, though, Mozilla says it is not putting any effort into the venture.

“This is not a Mozilla project, and we do not make devices,” a company representative told Re/code. “Firefox OS is an open platform freely available for any company to build on without restrictions. This means companies can experiment with different form factors that run Firefox OS.”

GigaOM has a different take on things, saying that Mozilla has been working closely with an unnamed partner on the project. According to GigaOM, the stick not only works similarly to Chromecast, but can even run some apps designed for Google’s Chrome OS-based streaming stick.

Until now, Mozilla’s Firefox OS efforts have been centered on the phone, though Panasonic has talked about integrating it into televisions.
